Most taxpayers will have an additional three days to prepare and file their taxes for 2015.  The tax filing deadline for individual taxpayers filing timely 2015 tax returns or extensions will be Monday, April 18, 2016.  Residents of Maine and Massachusetts will have until April 19th to be considered timely filed of their tax returns or extensions, because of a special rule for Patriot’s Day observance in those states on April 18, 2016.

Typically, when the standard April 15th due date falls on Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday,  the due date is moved to the next business day that is not a holiday.  However, 2016 is unusual because April 15th falls on a Friday.  The reason for the move is the observation of Emancipation Day in District of Columbia.  Because local holidays in D.C. affect tax deadlines in the same manner as federal holidays, the due date must be extended.
