The IRS is currently mailing out Notice CP01A to taxpayers. This is the notice that assigns a taxpayer an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). You would receive this letter if you were a victim of identity theft and you have previously filed Form 14039 – Identity Theft Affidavit with the IRS. (You may also receive a letter from your state if you filed the state equivalent form.)
This 6-digit number is necessary for a taxpayer (& a 2nd IP PIN for a spouse if jointly filed) to e-file his or her 2021 tax return. If you do not provide the letter(s) to your tax preparer, you will be unable to e-file and must paper file your 2021 return. Paper filing will take more time for the IRS to process your return resulting in delayed refund payments.
You may be able to recover your IP PIN if you no longer have your Notice CP01A, but the process can be cumbersome and time consuming.
Therefore, should you receive these letters, please remember to include them with your source documents that you will provide to your tax preparer for the preparation of your 2021 return.
