The Virginia Department of Taxation announced that Virginia taxpayers with a tax liability on their 2021 tax return could receive a one-time rebate of up to $250 each (up to $500 for those filing jointly). A tax liability is the amount of tax you owe throughout the year minus any credits. Credits include those for taxes paid to another state or credit for low income individuals, for example. The state is not currently able to provide taxpayer-specific eligibility information at this time.
Rebates to begin late September 2022
Eligible taxpayers who have filed their taxes prior to July 1, 2022 are likely to receive their rebates in September or October of 2022. In order to receive the rebate, if qualified, taxpayers must file their Virginia tax return by November 1, 2022.
Rebates may be issued as a check or a direct deposit. If eligible taxpayers received refunds via direct deposit for the their 2021 Virginia tax refund in 2022, then they are likely to receive their rebate by direct deposit into the same account. All other eligible taxpayers will receive their rebates by paper check through the mail.
Make Sure Your Information is Up to Date
If there have been any changes to a taxpayer’s name, address or Social Security Number, those changes must be made with the state prior to August 15, 2022 to avoid issues or delays with rebates. Visit this Virginia Department of Taxation webpage for information on how to make those updates.
